Belshaz'zar. (prince of Bel). The last king of Babylon. In Dan_5:2,
Nebuchadnezzar is called, the father of Belshazzar. This, of course, need
only mean, grandfather or ancestor. According to the well-known narrative,
Belshazzar gave a splendid feast in his palace, during the siege of
Babylon, (B.C. 538), using the sacred vessels of the Temple, which
Nebuchadnezzer had brought from Jerusalem. The miraculous appearance of
the handwriting on the wall, the calling in of Daniel to interpret its
meaning, the prophecy of the overthrow of the kingdom, and Belshazsar's
death, accorded in Daniel 5.
Dan 5:2 Belshazzar, while he
tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which
his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which
was in
Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines,
might drink therein. Dan 5:3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the
temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his
princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. Dan 5:4 They drank wine, and
praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and
of stone. Dan 5:5 In
the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against
the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the
king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Dan 5:6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and
his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed,
and his knees smote one against another.
