Isaiah
Isa'iah. Isaiah, the prophet, son of Amoz. The Hebrew name
signifies Salvation of Jahu (a shortened form of Jehovah). He prophesied concerning Judah and
Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of
Judah, Isa_1:1The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he
saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz,
and Hezekiah,
kings of Judah.
Isa 1:2 Hear, O heavens, and
give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought
up children, and they have rebelled against me.
covering probably 758 to 698 B.C.
He was married and had two sons. Rabbinical tradition says that Isaiah,
when 90 years old, was sawn asunder in the trunk of a carob tree by order
of Manasseh, to which, it is supposed, that reference is made in
Heb_11:37They were
stoned, they were sawn asunder, were
tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and
goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
Heb 11:38 (Of whom the world was not
worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and
in dens and caves of the earth.
Heb 11:39 And these all, having
obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
Heb 11:40 God having provided
some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
